Chevrolet History: Louis Chevrolet founded the Chevrolet Motor Car Company in 1911 and sold out to William C. Durant in 1915 so he could concentrate on racing cars. Within a few years Durant made enough money manufacturing Chevys to buy controlling interest of General Motors and by 1917 Chevrolet had joined Buick and Cadillac as a GM division.
The 1912 Chevrolet, built during the Antique Car Era, was known as the "Classic Six", a 5-passenger touring sedan featuring a 299 cubic inch 6-cylinder engine with a top speed of 15 miles per hour.
By 1950 Chevy was a household name and the various Chevrolet models were major players in the American automobile industry. By 1963, one out of every ten cars sold in the United States was a Chevrolet. During his career Louis Chevrolet won 27 major races and was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1926. He died in 1941 at the age of 63.
