Willys-Overland Logo John N. Willys started by purchasing the Overland Automotive Division of the Standard Wheel Company in 1908. Then in 1912 he renamed it the Willys-Overland Motor Company. Between 1912 and 1918 Ford was the only auto manufacturer that produced more cars. Willys split Willys-Overland off into its own division in 1917 and then bought the Duesenberg Motors Corporation in 1919. Willys changed the name of the Willys-Overland Motor Company to the Willys-Overland Motors in 1936. Willys-Overland Motors produced Jeeps for the U.S. military during World War II and tried to sell them to consumers afterwards under the CJ-2A badge but there was not much interest. Willys-Overland built the Willys Jeep Utility Wagon in 1946 followed by the Jeep utility truck but again sales were limited. Kaiser Motors bought the Willys-Overland Company in 1953 and changed the name to Willys Motor Company. Then they changed the name to the Kaiser-Jeep Corporation 1963. Kaiser dropped 'Willys' from name two years later and sold the company to American Motors (AMC ) in 1970. Then Renault joined Kaiser-Jeep to make the CJ Jeeps in 1980 and continued until 1986. Chrysler bought American Motors Corporation in 1987. |
