Studebaker Brother's Manufacturing Company History (Continued from top)
Studebaker Logo in 1959 The Studebaker Corporation began by building cars in 1911 and Fred Fish, an in-law, took charge in 1917. Between 1902 and 1911 Studebaker made the Studebaker Electric and introduced a gasoline engine option in 1904. Studebaker almost went under during the Great Depression. Their military trucks improved the situation during World War II but competition by the 'big three' (General Motors - Ford - Chrysler) was too much. Studebaker bought Packard in the 1950s but by 1956 they were deeper in debt and started to phase the Packards out, stopping completely in 1958. However that was not enough and by 1964 Studebaker had closed its doors. Studebaker then sold the Avanti brand name to a Studebaker dealer and it was resold several times before production stopped in about 2006. |
