GM Opel History (Continued from top)
Opel Logo Adam Opel created the Opel Company in 1863 to build sewing machines and bicycles and his sons produce the first Opel car in 1899. In 1929 GM bought Opel and eventually sold out in 2009 to Canadian company and Opel employees and dealers. Opel's sons partnered with a Friedrich Lutzmann to build cars but the first models were unsuccessful and Lutzmann sold out in 1901. The brothers came back the next year with a new car built under the 'Darracq', a French car builder and it was named the 'Opel-Darracq'. The Opel-Darracq had an Opel body on a Darracq chassis and featured a two-cylinder engine. The Opel-Darracq was only made from 1906 to 1907. In 1911 the Opel factory burnt down but it was rebuilt and by 1913 Opel was the largest car maker in Germany. General Motors bought a majority interest in Opel in 1929 and bought out the Opel brothers completely in 1931. Opel production halted during World War II and the USSR got control for a short time afterwards. However General Motors got Opel back in 1948 and by 1972 Opel was the largest auto manufacturer in Germany again. |
