Mazda Logo Mazda opened his machine tool business, the Toyo Cork Kogyo Company, in 1920, and started building automobiles under that name in 1931. Despite stopping production during WW II to make weapons for Japan, by 1960 they were an established automaker and entered the U.S. market a decade later. Mazda became famous for their innovative Wankel rotary engine, which outperformed most piston engines of equal displacement. In 1984 Mazda change the company name from Toyo Cork Kogyo to Mazda and the Ford Motor Company took control in 1996. Ford entered the Asian and Australian markets with models such as the Probe, Escort, Mercury Tracer and Escape. |
