Maserati Logo In 1937 the Maserati's sold out to the Orsi family but remained as engineers. In 1940 and 1941 the Indianapolis 500 was won by a Maserati. During WW II Maserati made parts for the Italian army but soon after returned to racing. In 1971 Maserati built the first mid-engined model which led the way to the Maserati Merak and Maserati Khamsin. The energy crisis of the 1970's hurt Maserati and financially so they sold out to Citroen. Then Citroen went ran out of money and the Benelli Motorcycle Company took over in 1975 and Alessandro de Tomaso, who was the majority stock holder, became managing director for Maserati. In 1983 Fiat became the majority stock holder of Maserati and then the Ferrari Automobile Company, who owned Fiat, took over in 1999. |
