Lincoln History (Continued from top)
Lincoln Logo In 1917 Henry Leland quit General Motors to start the Lincoln Motor Company and build Liberty aircraft engines for the WW I war effort. After the war he retooled to make Lincolns, a luxury automobile similar to Cadillac, but he quickly ran out of money and sold out to the Ford Motor Company. Leland named the car after president Lincoln and the 1939 V12 model, called the 'Sunshine Special', was the first vehicle made especially for a president. The greyhound was used as the Lincoln logo in 1927 and then they switched to the diamond. The 1936 Lincoln Zephyr sold well but the Continental was the most popular model thanks to the efforts of Edsel Ford. In 1998 the Lincoln Continental was the best selling luxury car in America but is now out sold by a variety of other vehicles, such as the Mercedes-Benz. |
