Franklin Logo Franklin led the way with aluminum air-cooled engines because they were cheaper to build and lighter than water cooling. The 1904 Franklin sat for four, had a ten horsepower engine up front and a two-speed transmission. In 1905 Franklin introduced the first six-cylinder engine and in 1907 they introduced automatic spark advance. While water cooling was cheaper and could produce more horsepower but air-cooled engines were a favorite of northerners before antifreeze came out. Franklins use wood chassis until 1928 (when they became impractical) because they vibrated less than steel ones. Franklin introduced a 12-cylinder, air-cooled monster in 1932 but the car was too expensive for the beginning of the Great Depression and the company filed for bankruptcy in 1934. |
