1958 Edsel The first Edsel came out with lots of publicity on September 4, 1957, and Ford called it 'E-Day'. Ford had just made their stock public and they wanted the Edsel to compete against Oldsmobile. Edsel was supposed to be a new division but they were never accepted by the public and production stopped in 1958. The Edsel was sold through a string of Mercury-Lincoln dealers. The 1958 Edsel was introduced as a larg Mercury-based Citation and Corsair, and as a Ford-based Pacer and Ranger. But only the Ranger and Corsair were made in 1959 and the Corsair was cancelled in 1960. Ford made less than 3,000 Edsels before production stopped in 1959. |
