Auburn History (Continued from top)
Auburn Logo They were successful but the shortage of metal during World War I forced them out of business. The 1904 Auburn was a touring car featuring a tonneau cover, seating for four passengers, and had a one-cylinder engine with a two-speed transmission. Ralph Austin Bard and other investors bought the company in 1919 but couldn't make a profit and eventually sold out to Errett Lobban Cord in 1924. In 1926 Cord worked with the Duesenberg Corporation to build one of the first front wheel drive cars and gradually became famous for their body styling and quality. The 1928 Auburn Boattail Speedster, 1935-37 Auburn Speedsters, 810 and 812 Cords and the Model J Duesenberg were among the popular models. The company headquarters are in Auburn, Indiana, which is now the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Museum, a National Historic Landmark. |
