Aston Martin logo Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford started Aston Martin in London, England, in 1913 and produced their first car two years later. World War I interrupted production and only about 50 cars were built after the war. The company went bankrupt and closed its doors in 1926. In 1929 Aston Martin was reopened to build race cars but was not profitable and by 1936 the company was building road cars. They managed to build 700 vehicles before World War II came, stopping production again, but they managed to stay solvent by building aircraft parts. Victor Gauntlett had ran Aston Martin throughout the 1980's but was unable to produce a popular car gave up control to the Ford Motor Company in 1994. Ford introduced the Aston Martin V8 Vantage in 2005 but by then their focus was back to racing and they established the Aston Martin Racing division. Poor sales forced Ford to auction Aston Marin off in 2006 and it was purchased by a consortium led by David Richards in 2007. There were almost 13,000 Aston Martins build between 1955 and 2007. |
