AMC Logo 1954-1969 American Motors Corporation (AMC) was started in 1954 when Nash-Kelvinator merged with Hudson . Thomas B. Jeffery, the founder, built his first automobile in 1897 and in 1900 he converted the Sterlin Bicycle Factory in Wisconsin to build Ramblers. Within two years AMC was the second automobile company to mass produce over 1500 vehicles in the United States, the year after Oldsmobile and the year before Ford . Jeffery died in 1910 and his son Charles took over and in 1914 renamed the 'Rambler' the 'Jeffery'. Charles W. Nash purchased the company in 1916, renaming it the Nash Motors Company, and 1954 he merged with Hudson and later Kelvinator to form AMC. American Motors was purchased by the Chrysler Corporation in 1987 and Chrysler changed the name to Eagles.
