Ferdinand Porsche started with Volkswagen and produced the first Porsche model 64 in 1938, followed by the first production car, the Porsche 356, in 1948. Porsche has a long history of awards for style and function. The Porsche 550 Spyder was a successful racer but the Porsche 911, with a six-cylinder 'Boxer' engine, is the most well known. Porsche has always had a close relationship with Volkswagen, sharing features and technology, and many other automobile manufactures consult with Porsche engineers as well. In 1972 family issues lead to putting the day-to-day operation of the company in non-family hands but heirs to Ferdinand Porsche still hold controlling interest.
