General Motors Corporation History (Continued from top)

GMC Logo

GMC Logo

GMC is one of the largest divisions of the General Motors Corporation. It started as the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company, which was purchased by General Motors in 1909. Then GM bought the Reliance Motor Car Company and merged the two in 1911, forming GMC Truck. 600,000 GMC trucks were produced for the U.S. military during World War II. In 1943 GM added Yellow Coach buses and renamed the division the GM Truck and Coach Division.

GMC and Chevrolet trucks are similar but have never been identical. They traditionally have different trim and GMC is generally priced higher. GMC trucks are promoted as the 'Professional Grade' version of Chevrolet trucks, offering more features and options than Chevrolet.
