Aston Martin was started by Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford in London, England, in 1913. They built their first car in 1915 but production was held up by WW I. About 50 cars were built after the war but by 1926 the company was bankrupt and out of business.

Aston Martin was resurrected in 1929 to build race cars but by 1932 they were in financial trouble again and by 1936 they had switched to building road cars. However WW II stopped production after only 700 cars were built and the company managed to stay solvent by building aircraft parts.

In 1947 David Brown Limited bought the company, followed by Lagonda and the Tickford coach-building company and by 1955 was producing the famous DB2, DB3, DB4 DB5, DB6 and DBS series cars.

Victor Gauntlett had control of Aston Martin throughout the 1980's but internal disagreements and financial backing continued to plague the companies ability to produce a popular car and the Ford Motor Company took control in 1994. Ford introduced the Aston Martin V8 Vantage in 2005, joining the production of the DB8 and DB9 Volante, but by 2005 the focus went back to racing with the establishment of the Aston Martin Racing division.

However poor sales in the 2000's forced Ford to put Aston Marin on the auction block in 2006 and it was purchased by a consortium led by David Richards in 2007. There were almost 13,000 Aston Martins build between 1955 and 2007.
