Oakland History: Edward P. Murphy was a built the original Oakland but General Motors bought him out in 1909. General Motors wanted the Oakland to fit between the Chevrolet and Oldsmobile in price and produced the cars until 1931, which is when Oakland became the Pontiac division of GM.
