DeLorean History: John DeLorean was on the fast track among General Motors executives when he quit to start the De Lorean Motor Company. The 1981 DeLorean took two years to develop in their North Ireland plant and labor issues seemed to contribute to a long list of quality woes. Vehicles were eventually shipped to the United States for significant refitting before delivery and the 1981 model was eventually sold without a warranty. By 1982 DeLorean had fixed most of the manufacturing problems and was offering a five year/50,000 mile warranty but it was too late. The all stainless steel body got mixed reviews, the high price limited the market, and bad press after an apparent attempt to gain funds through the drug trade killed early enthusiasm. When the doors closed in 1982 investors had lost more than $100 million dollars on the classic DeLorean.
