Jaguar Cars Limited History (Continued from top)

Jaguar Logo

Jaguar Logo

Jaguar started as the Swallow Sidecar Company in 1922, or SS Cars Ltd. However the name was changed to Jaguar after World War II because the initials 'SS' reminded Englanders of the German invasion. In 1966 Jaguar merged with the British Motor Corporation to become British Motor Holdings and in 1968 they merged with Leyland and Rover to become British Leyland Motor Corporation. However England had to bale them out of financial problems in 1975 and the nationalized company became British Leyland Limited.

Jaguar separated from British Leyland in 1984 and sold out to the Ford Motor Company in 1989. In 1999 Ford added Jaguar to their Premier Automotive Group that included Aston Martin and Volvo. The first post-war Jaguar was the 1948 Mark V, featuring independent suspension and hydraulic brakes. They also introduced the XK120 sports car with an all new overhead cam engine that year. In 1951 the Mark VII Saloon was built especially for the American Market and sales soared. Independent rear suspension was added to the Mark X in 1963.
