Chevrolet History (Continued from top)

Chevrolet Logo

Chevrolet Logo

Chevrolet and Chevy have become Synonymous names for cars built by the Chevrolet division of General Motors Corporation. Louis Chevrolet and William C. Durant founded Chevrolet in 1911. Louis Chevrolet was a racecar driver and Durant was the founder of General Motors. Durant had been forced out of General Motors in 1910 and thought Chevrolet's designs could help him regain his position.

The 1912 Chevrolet was known as the 'Classic Six', a 5-passenger touring sedan featuring a 299 cubic inch 6-cylinder engine with a top speed of 15 miles per hour.

By 1916 Durant had made enough money to buy a majority of Gemeral Motors shares and became presidcent the following year. And Chevrolet became a division of GM shortly after.

By 1950 Chevy had become a household name and Chevrolet a major player in the American automobile industry. By 1963, one out of every ten cars sold in the United States was a Chevrolet.

During his career Louis Chevrolet won 27 major races and was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1926. He died in 1941 at the age of 63.
