Oldsmobile History (Continued from top) Oldsmobile Logo Ransom E. Olds started Olds Motor Vehicle Company in 1897 and the famous Curved Dash Olds came out in 1901. Ransom Olds left the company in 1907 to start the REO Motor Car Company and the Olds Motor Vehicle Company was sold to General Motors in 1908. General Motors used the Oldsmobile line to introduce many inovative ideas such as chrome trim, a mono-block V8, the automatic transmission, automatic headlight dimmers and curved windshields. The Oldsmobile Toronado was the first successful front wheel drive vehicle in American and the 1949 'Rocket V8' was the first mass-produced overhead valve V8 engine. The 1964 Oldsmobile with a 442 cubic inch V8 engine, four-barrel carburetor, four-wpeed manual transmission and dual exhaust was a popular player during the Muscle Car Era. General Motors began phasing out the Oldsmobile line in 2002, ending with the Bravada in 2002. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
