Austin Motor Company History (Continued from top)

Austin made a lot of money building weapons and equipment for the World War I war effort but acquired too much overhead and modest vehicle sales after the war were not enough to stay solvent. By 1921 Austin was broke but managed to find new financing in time to introduced the Austin Seven in 1922. Fortunately the Austin Seven was a success and the company was able to stay solvent during the Great Depression. During World War II Austin was once again able to make a profit by building trucks and aircraft for the military.

In 1952 Austin merged with Nuffield, who owned Morris, as the British Motor Corporation. The high price of Gasoline prompted the release of the Austin Mini in 1959, which was another big hit. In 1952 Austin made a deal with the Nissan Motor Company to assemble and distribute Austins in Japan, which lasted seven years. Nissan produced over 20,000 Austins but rust problems with the Metros, Maestros and Montegos attracted too much negative publicity and the Austin name was pulled in 1987.
