How to Find Antique, Vintage and Classic Car and Truck Parts
When Simple Searching Won´t Do: How to Find Rare Parts on the Net.
Here are some suggestions to help:
Imagine: You´ve just finished most of the restoration of a Model T Ford you found in an estate sale, but one part – maybe it´s a door handle, or maybe it´s some other detail – is eluding you. What do you do? Alternatively, maybe you need to
insure your restored vehicle. How do you know where to turn? The answer, in both cases, is "The Internet," but we´re not talking about simple searches here. At least…not always.
Search First
Of course, firing up your favorite search engine is the first thing you should try, especially when looking for rare parts. If you´re lucky, you´ll get an instant return of several parts outlets, restoration catalogues, and the like, all willing to send you the item you need. In some cases, however, the part you´re seeking doesn´t turn up in the search results. Never fear, the Internet has more options you can try.
When Simple Searches Fail
<
When your initial search comes up dry there are several more things you can look for:
Parts Catalogues: Instead of searching for a specific car or part, look for something more generic, like "vintage auto parts." You´ll likely get a list of resellers and catalogues with contact information, so you can send an email or make a phone call and ask if they have what you need.
Gearhead Forums: Spend any time on the web, and you will eventually stumble into a group or forum where other auto restorers and owners exchange information. Not only is this a great way to find an elusive part, but you can also get tips on how best to install it, and recommendations of which insurance companies to contact. You may even find yourself forming friendships with other forum members, or indulging in heated debates about which antique auto really is the best example of American engineering.
Owners and Enthusiasts Clubs: Not only are online make- and/or model-specific owners and enthusiasts clubs a fantastic way to meet other people who appreciate the same kind of cars you do, but you´ll also find step-by-step photo montages of restorations, sources for parts, service, and insurance, support and guidance. As well, such clubs often qualify for group discounts on supplies, parts, and insurance.
