Mercury History (Continued from top)

Mercury Logo

Mercury Logo

Mercury is a brand name adopted by Henry Ford in 1939. Ford wanted a car that could compete with the GM Buick but most of them were more like other Fords. Mercury started as an independent division until it was added to the Lincoln line in 1945. The popular "Lead Sleds" came out in 1949 and the 1950's were the most successful years. However the Mercury line up looked very similar to Fords and Lincolns until Cougar and Marquis arrived in the 1970's. However the styling became too similar to other fords in the 1980s and sales dwindled.

The early Mercury logo was a profile of the Roman god Mercury's head but it was changed to a cougar in the 1960s and other cats were adopted after that. Some of the higher priced models used the Lincoln diamond.
