Land Rover started by copying the Jeep shortly after World War II but they had to use an aluminum alloy and magnesium body because there was still a shortage of steel. However that proved to be a good move because it gave their vehicles a reputation for durability. Land Rover went through several hands over the following years, from British Leyland, British Aerospace, BMW and finally the Ford Motor Company. Tata Motors bought Land Rover from Ford in 2007 but competition from Toyota, among others, killed their American market.
