Jaguar Logo SS Cars Ltd., aka the Swallow Sidecar Company, was the foundation of Jaguar in 1922 but "SS" was too reminiscent of Nazi Germany so after WW II the name was changed to Jaguar. Jaguar then became part of the British Motor Corporation in 1966, who merged with Leyland and Rover to become British Leyland Motor Corporation in 1968. But in 1975 financial problems led to a bale out by England and the company was renamed British Leyland Limited. In 1984 Jaguar split from British Leyland and then in 1989 they were acquired by the Ford Motor Company. Ford added Jaguar to their premier line of cars that included Aston Martin and Volvo in 1999. The 1948 Jaguar Mark V was the first post-WW II car, offering independent suspension and hydraulic brakes. Then came the XK120 sports car featuring an all-new overhead cam engine. When the Mark VII Saloon was made especially for the U.S. market in 1951 sales soared. In 1963 the Mark X came out with the first independent rear suspension. Tata Motors now owns Jaguar. |
