Hudson History (Continued from top)
Hudson Logo Hudson bought the Essex Motor Company and added the Essex as his high-end car in 1922. In 1932 Hudson introduced the Essex-Terraplane and it became his most popular car, replacing the Essex by 1938. Hudson created the first starter motor, the first secondary brake system, and was first to balance the crankshaft to gain speed. J.L. Hudson built 300,000 Hudson and Essex cars at his peak in 1929. Hudson advertised the 1936 Hudson as the largest car on the market but then had to stop production during the war years to make parts for the military. Hudson restarted his car line in 1945 with an all new rounded style and the 1951 Hudson Hornet was a very common sight on NASCAR tracks.. J.L. Hudson built cars from 1909 to 1957 but was unable to keep up with growing expenses and eventually merged with Nash Motors, becoming American Motors, in 1954. |
