1933 American Austin Herbert Austin started the Austin Motor Company in 1904 in England and introduced the Austin Seven in 1922. The Austin Seven had only a seven horsepower engine but was very popular. Austin expanded to America and opened the American Austin Car Company in Detroit, Michigan, in 1929. The Austin Seven featured a four cylinder engine and the coupe model sold for less than the Ford V8 roadster. Initial sales were good until the Great Depression hit and by 1934 production was stopped. Three years later Roy Evans, the company president, renamed the company as the American Bantam Car Company, offering a more streamlined version of the Austin, but the car never caught on and production stopped in 1940. American Bantam built Jeep for the U.S. Army through 1941 and Jeep trailers until 1956. Then the company was dissolved and today the American Austin and American Bantam are only popular among hot rodders and drag racers. |
