Automobile History

The Brass Car Era:

The Brass Car Era started in about 1890 at the beginning of the automobile industry and lasted until about 1919. 'Brass cars' were driven by steam engines with bright brass fittings and were commonly referred to as 'horseless carriages'. Brass cars were usually made out of steel and wood. - More

The Electric Car Era:

Thomas Davenport built the first American electric automobile in 1834 and by 1890 they were a popular form of transportation. Electric cars disappeared when John D. Rockefeller successfully encouraged Henry Ford to use gasoline engines so he would have a market for his oil products. - More

The Antique Car Era:

The Antique Car Era started in about 1920 when backyard mechanics began putting gasoline engines in anything on wheels. The production of antique cars was enhanced by the assembly line which introduced quality control and standardized parts. The Antique Car Era thrived because of cheap gasoline. - More

The Vintage Car Era:

The Vintage Car Era followed World War I, when there was an abundance of factories, material and equipment and men needing work. The Vintage Car Era ended in 1946 when the Great Depression and World War II ended vehicle production. Vintage cars spearheaded innovation in the auto industry. - More

The Classic Car Era:

The Classic Car Era followed World War II. Classic car production was driven by consumer demand for bigger, faster and fancier cars. Classic cars thrived due to cheap gasoline and good roads, until pollution control laws and gas shortages stymied performance engines in the early 1970s. - More

Hot Rods & Roadsters:

Hot rods evolved when back-yard mechanics found how much fun it is to customize old Model T Fords. Hot rods are custom built vehicles with high performance engines and unique drivetrains and suspension systems. When you remove the top from a hot rod you have a 'roadster'. - More

Muscle Cars:

Muscle Cars are a product of the Classic Car Era, when improved roads and the 'baby boomer' generation called for more speed and power. Muscle cars are relatively light weight, factory built, cars with big engines, such as the the Chevrolet Camaro, Pontiac GTO and Ford Mustang produced in the late 1960s. - More

AntiqueCar.com:

AntiqueCar.com was started in 2004 as a means to develop and share my interest in antique, vintage and classic cars. My goal has been to provide useful information about antique cars and trucks, vintage cars and trucks and classic cars and trucks, as well as hot rods, roadsters, fire engines and most anything else on wheels prior to the 1970's.
