Cadillac Logo Cadillac is the luxury automobile division of General Motors Corporation. The Cadillac was named after Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, sieur de Cadillac, who founded Detroit, Michigan, in 1701. The first Cadillac appeared 1902 and was almost identical to the 1903 Model A Ford. However better engineering made the car superior to the Ford. Cadillac won the annual Dewar Trophy for the most important advancement in the automobile industry in 1909. General Motors Corporation purchased Cadillac in 1909 to be the hallmark of its luxury line. The 1912 Cadillac was the first automobile to adopt electric starters and in 1915 it became the first mass produced automobile to feature a V8 engine. Cadillac is also credited with the first safety glass in 1926 and the first fully synchronized transmission in 1928. And Cadillac became the first vehicle to adopt the revolutionary Phillips screws in 1940. The smaller LaSalle first appeared in 1927 and other lines include the De Ville, Fleetwood, Eldorado, Seville, Cimarron and Escalade, their first SUV. |
