Buick History (Continued from top)

Buick Logo

Buick Logo

David Dunbar Buick started the Buick Motor Company in 1903 and sold it to James Whiting in 1904. Whiting hired William C. Durant to manage Buick and it soon became the largest automobile company in America, providing the capital for Durant to start the General Motors Corporation.

Buick was marketed as an upper end vehicle, priced between the Oldsmobile and Cadillac . The Trishield logo was adopted from the Buick family crest in 1959 and represents the three models: LeSabre, Invicta, and Electra. The series of three or four portholes on the front fender was adopted in 1949. The portholes were discontinued for many years but came back in the 2003 Park Avenue and continued with the Lucerne - where the number of portholes indicated the number of engine cylinders.

The Buick V8 engine was known as the 'nailhead' to hot rodders because of the unique vertical attachment of the valve covers, which allowed the engine to fit in smaller compartments.
